Young Characters Of Bollywood Whose Version Of Patriotism We Could Relate To
Updated : August 14, 2019 04:22 PM ISTOut of many other things that the older generations does not like about our generation patriotism or the apparent lack of it is one thing that perhaps tops the list. But, to be honest as a generation we love our country as much as our forefathers did. The only change that has come up is our version or definition of patriotism is different from that of them.
Just like our people of pur generation, here are a few characters from Bollywood whose version of patriotism is something that all of us could relate to.
No other film in the history of Bollywood showed the interesting dynamic that youth pf today shares with patriotism, the way Rang De Basanti did. It showed how each of us, no matter how indifferent our attitude comes across, we have it in us to make the wrongs of the country right. We might have accepted ‘western culture’ but our souls and our hearts belong to this country and this is the soil fromwhich we derive our strength when we need it.
Apart from giving us a song that became our anthem to celebrate national pride, Chak De also gave us a dose of patriotism that was unforgettable. The incredible Chak De girls reminded us that it is only when we derive the strength from our diversity we can win the world. The girls also reminded us that it is only by dreaming big and having ambitions and self–belief we can make a country that does not bow in front of anyone.
Patriots are not only the ones who fight for the safety of the country at the borders. While they will always be our heroes there are also many heroes around us that we need to acknowledge and No One Killed Jessica did exactly that. In the film Rani Mukerji who plays the role of a firebrand journalist screams, ‘Justice has been denied. You can live with it, but I won’t’ she summed up our emotions. Instead of blaming the system for our misfortunes, we believe in taking charge and making wrongs, right.
Taapsee’s character in Mulk is one of the most refreshing characters in recent times. She is a Hindu married to a Muslim man and totally in love with him and his family who bear the same love towards her. Yet, she disagrees with her husband when he suggests that they decide the religion of their unborn child beforehand. She is also a feisty lawyer who ensures that her family is punished for their minority status in the country. She perfectly every young patriot who understands that it is only by challenging the wrong practices in the country we can take it to new heights and not by putting others down.
When it comes to young patriots in Bollywood, Karan Shergill in Lakshya is probably the one we can relate to the most. The character summed up exactly what we have been trying to make older generations understand. Yes, our lives might be a mess and yes, we are not always sure about what we want to do in life. But once we decide it and duty and honour calls, there is no extent that we cannot go to for answering that call.
Sehmat’s character might be set in 70s, yet her notion of patriotism is something a lot of us relate to. One of the most brilliant things about this character is the fact that she is ruthless spy but she has her emotions. Also, just like Sehmat we also do not believe that the enemies we are fighting are monsters. We fight because that is the need of the hour and not because we believe that the enemies sitting across the border is always wrong and we are always right.
This is another character that so many of us could relate to. Patriotism means to have a deep love for country but loving your country does not translate into turning a blind eye to problems and issues that we as a country suffer from every day. Noor’s rant, ‘Mumbai you are killing me’ echoes all the frustration that we have against systems that inefficient , lazy and corrupt to the core. Our patriotism lies in acknowledging the flaws of the country and trying to resolve them to the best of our capabilities.
For everyone who thinks that the youth of today could not care less about the country, we had Jasjit in Raanjhnaa. He summed the fact we want change, in fact, we are impatient for change and we have what it takes to go ahead and bring that change for ourselves. Yes, we question the authority and break rules but that is only because we make new rules, fair rules to play by. The character symbolized the hunger for a better tomorrow that our generation swears by.
As a generation nothing is good enough for us until it is of global standards. Suru’s character in ABCD 2 is something just like that. We have the talent and we are not scared of hard work. All we want is to rise above mediocrity, dream big have massive ambitions and that’s how we want to bring glory to our country on international platforms. This spirit of never giving up and having global standards is something that is hallmark of every young patriot in today’s world.
