5 Films That Have Not Worked in 2018 So Far And What They Taught Us
Updated : March 09, 2018 07:38 PM ISTIt has been only 3 months into the year 2018, and Bollywood has come up with a wide range of films including period drama, social drama, horror, political thriller, rom-coms and even black comedy. However, out of the 8 major releases, only Padmaavat, Padman and Sonu Ke Titu Ki Sweety has been able to charm the audiences.
They say a stitch in time saves nine, so here we try to understand what went wrong early in the year and save us trouble later. Here are the films that did not do well at the box office and taught us a few lessons when it comes to what works and what doesn't work in Bollywood.
Kaalakandi
Kaalakandi starring Saif Ali Khan and directed by Raj & DK taught us that an overdose of quirk does not sit well Indian cine-goers. The script of the film proved to be too convoluted that had no chances of striking a chord with the audience.
1921
By far this has been the biggest disappointment of 2018. The Zarine Khan and Karan Kundra starrer entirely failed to win over the audience. The performance of the film is yet another indication that Bollywood struggles enedlessly with horror as a genre. It is also a wake-up call that goes to prove 1920 franchise brand of horror of possessed ladies and isolated castles are horror clichés that are not going to work in Bollywood anymore.
Mukkabaaz
Be it Bombay Velvet or Mukkabaaz, the fact that Anurag Kashyap and commercial entertainers don’t sit well with the Indian audience is clear by now. While Bombay Velvet was a shoddy attempt on the director’s part, Mukkabaaz was actually a good film with a solid script and stellar performance that balanced social drama with masala entertainer elements. But the box office performance of the film is a clear testament that when it comes to entertainers, Anurag Kashyap usually has a rotten luck.
Aiyaary
There was a lot of buzz about the film as it marked the yet another union of Neeraj Pandey and Manoj Bajpayee in a political/spy thriller that has so far managed to wow the audience. In fact, this time the makers also added mainstream star power by bringing Sidhharth Malhotra in to the mix. However, after a slew of successful film in the same genre, this failure of this movie clearly indicates that Neeraj Pandey need to break out of the mould and do something that would wow us like he did with f
Pari
Yet another horror film and yet another disappointment. Although the film has been appreciated for going beyond horror movie clichés, yet the convoluted script and the jerky narrative did not go well with the audience. Even after a novel attempt, the failure of Pari goes to show that Indian audience would be pleased with nothing else than a groundbreaking attempt at the genre and half-baked attempts and relying on jumps scares is not going to help the cause.
Here is hoping that Bollywood will take notes from these failures and steer clear from making the same mistakes rest of the year.
