5 Indian Film Personalities Who Were Awarded Major Awards Posthumously

The Indian film cinema made its debut in 1913 when Dadasaheb Phalke, the legendary filmmaker, made India's first films, titled Raja Harischandra. Since then, the Indian cinematic scene has seen rapid changes in development in terms of how films are made, the technicalities associated with cinema and how almost every major speaking language has its own film industry.

The power of cinema cannot be taken lightly and there have been legends like Prithviraj Kapoor, Raj Kapoor, Ashok Kumar, Guru Dutt etc. who have popularized Indian cinema abroad. Eminent film personalities have won almost all the major awards out there but still, sometimes, a few legends are missed by the Awards and later on, they are awarded posthumously. Yash Chopra: The legendary director passed away in 2012 before finishing off his film Jab Tak Hai Jaan and was later awarded Filmfare Lifetime Achievement Award in 2013.

Dev Anand: The legendary actor passed away in 2011 but was later awarded an honorary stamp by the Indian Postal Department in 2013.

MG Ramachandran: The legendary Tami actor passed away in 1987 and was later awarded Bharat Ratna in 1988.

Satyajit Ray: The acclaimed filmmaker passed away in 1992 and was later posthumously awarded Akira Kurosawa Award for Lifetime Achievement in Directing at San Francisco. 

Saeed Jaffrey: The actor passed away in 2015 and was posthumously awarded Padma Shri by the Government of India in January 2016.
