7 Films And TV Shows, Other Than Padmaavat, That Featured The Legend Of Rani Padmavati!

As soon as the filming of Padmavati aka Padmaavat had started, it looked like the film was jinxed. At first, the fuss was about the second male lead who would play Raja Rawal Ratan Singh. After that was finalised, Karni Sena started to vandalise the sets and even attacked Sanjay Leela Bhansali, because of an apparent dream sequence where Allaundin Khanlji and Padmavati were to be seen together. While the stance was cleared by all, and even by those who watched the film, the controversy just did not subside.

While the film released today, amidst a lot of security and no release in 3 states, we have been wondering all this while if the film deserved all the controversy. In fact, it seems to so many in the nation that the legend of Padmavati is the reason that it faced so much trouble even before it could release. 

But this is not the first time that something has been made on the legend of Rani Padmavati. Here is a list of 6 other films and TV shows that featured the lore of Padmavati or Padmini of Chittor:

1. Kamonar Agun or Flames Of The Flesh (1930)

This was the first film that had the legend of Rani Padmavati. It was a silent Bengali film that released in 1930 and had Debaki Bose. 

2. Chittor Rani Padmini (1963)

This was a Tamil film that released back in 1962. While Vyjayanthimala played the titular role, Tamil superstar Sivaji Ganesan played Rana Ratan Singh and M.N. Nambiar played Khalji. 

3. Maharani Padmini (1964)

The film was the Hindi remake of the Tamil film. It had Anita Guha in the lead with Jairaj as her husband and Sajjan as Khalji. The film flopped but is remembered for its great songs.

4. Lala Hardaul (2012)

This is a Bundelkhandi film that featured the tale of Lala Hardaul who is a local legend. In this film, popular TV actress Divyanka Tripathi played the character of Rani Padmavati.

5. Bharat Ek Khoj

This TV serial that was aired on DD National had a section on Rani Padmavati. The role of Allauddin Khalji was played by actor Om Puri.

6. Chittod Ki Rani Padmini Ka Johur

This is a Tv serial that was aired on Sony TV in 2009. Tejaswani Lonari featured as Padmini and the show made headlines because of the sets and costumes. However, it could not complete even 6 months due to low TRPs.

7. Main Hoon Padmini

This film has been announced and made headlines since Padmaavat was shelved for some time. It will be produced by Ashok Shekhar and the writer is based in Rajasthan so as to avoid controversies. The film will release in Hindi and Rajasthani.
