Thanks to the smashing success of Kabir Singh, Kiara Advani is the toast of Bollywood right now. Despite the surmounting controversies, Kiara’s act in the film has mostly received positive reactions and if upcoming projects are anything to go by, Kiara seems to be the next big thing in Bollywood. With her performances, her striking beauty and killer fashion sense she has managed to garner legions of fans.

However, even if you are the biggest fan of Kiara, it will take you a while to remember her debut film. Well, nothing is wrong with your memory but her debut was that inconsequential. Kiara stepped into the Bollywood with Kabir Sadanand’s Fugly in 2014 which tanked at the box-office without a trace.

Despite belonging to a family which has ties to some of the biggest superstars like Ashok Kumar, Saeed Jaffery, Juhi Chawla, Kiara surely did not get the dream debut that most star kids do and on top of that her debut film had almost written her off.  However, Kiara got over the setback and was a part of the film M.S. Dhoni where she played the role of Sakshi Rawat, Dhoni’s real-life wife. The film went on to become a huge hit, but Kiara did not get a lot of mileage from it.

Next, she followed it up with Abbas Mustan’s Machine which is only remembered for the colossal wreck that it was. In most cases, two such major defeats so early on in career would have been enough to end an actress’ career but Kiara persevered.

At this point, instead of getting disheartened by her flops, Kiara did a good job of networking. It was maybe here where her filmy connections came into play. Understanding the current trends and her intended space in the ecosystem, Kiara managed to get the main lead in Karan Johar’s short story in the Netflix anthology Lust Stories. Who knew her jump to stardom will have a masturbation scene as its foundation! But rarely has one single scene made such a major difference in someone’s career. But Lust Stories and that scene gave Kiara the mileage and popularity that even two superhits might not have been able to do.

She showed a great sense of judgment by also making her Telugu debut at the same time with Mahesh Babu’s Bharath Ane Nenu. The film went on to become a landmark hit and was breaking one record after another. Whether it was box-office reports or discourse on alternative content on OTT platforms, there was no way one could not talk Kiara Advani. She had finally arrived and was a star in the making.

In fact, childhood friend Isha Ambani’s wedding also, luckily, came at the right time. With the success of Kabir Singh, Kiara is now is very much a part of the big league of Bollywood and her upcoming projects are a testament to that. From Sidharth to Akshay Kumar Kiara is now a legit Bollywood star. Flops like Fugly and Machine are somewhere buried in the past now. One inconsequential role here, one ‘First Class’ dance number there, bold choices, perseverance, and hard work- Kiara’s story is not a filmy story of overnight stardom but it just re-iterates the pragmatic teaching that we received as kids- it ultimately the slow and steady wins the race.
