5 Indian Web Series Which Prove That Big Bucks Are Being Spent On Digital Entertainment Right Now

There is no denying the fact that the advent of digital streaming has changed the face of entertainment in the world and in the country forever. While more cerebral content lovers and unequivocally veering towards the web series much more than films or television, the traditional cynics cannot help but question if Netflix and Amazon Prime will ever replace traditional movie-going experience and if not is it a lucrative business?

Akshay Kumar is all set to make his presence felt in the world of digital entertainment as well. The makers of his debut webseries are not afraid to cast one of the highest paid actors in Bollywood in the series and are apparently paying Akshay a whopping 90 crores to be a part of the series.

Sacred Games

India’s biggest success story on the digital platform, Sacred Games has not only received rave reviews and popularity in the country but even the global audiences have been floored by it. Produced by Phantom, the production budget of the 8 episode series, including marketing was about 25-40 crores, which is actually pretty lavish.

Amazon Prime’s first Indian original series also had Bollywood tempering added to it due to the presence of stars like Vivek Oberoi and Richa Chadda. Based against the backdrop of cricket, the series had a pretty lavish budget of Rs. 2 crores per episode plus an added promotion and marketing budget which amounted to a production budget of about 45 crores.

Breathe

R. Madhavan and Amit Sadh starrer Breathe received mixed responses from the audience but even then the showrunners valiantly tried to pump money into the promotions. The promotion of Breathe was directing clashing with TV’s super popular show Bigg Boss and the makers went all guns blazing to spend an additional 20 crores on the marketing and promotion.

Special Mention: Meherunnisa

Although Ekta Kapoor dropped the idea of making it, ALTBalaji was all set to make a webseries about Mehr-un-Nissa. Ekta had apparently allotted about 25 crores to the project but later backed off from the project due to unknown reasons.
