Badrinath Ki Dulhania Was A Copy Of DDLJ Admits Director
Updated : February 04, 2020 01:48 PM ISTThere were revelations galore during a recent press enclave when Karan Johar and Badrinath Ki Dulhania director Shashank Khaitan shared the stage to launch the trailer of their upcoming horror film Bhoot.
The tongue in cheek moments during this press meet were endless. There were several disclosures made pertaining to the film industry and the constant copying mentality of the Indian Bollywood writers and filmmakers. One such revelation was made by Shashank Khaitan himself.
While speaking about his love for horror films, the director of Bhoot, Bhanu Pratap Singh stated that he loved the genre but he had written a romantic comedy and went to pitch it to Shashank who outright rejected it. He stated, “I love horror films, It wouldn’t be an exaggeration to state that they are my first love. I insisted because I worked with Shashank Khaitan on Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania. I was an assistant to him. When I pitched with my ideas to him, he was like it is Dharma Productions, they will be making just romantic comedies and they will never venture into the horror space. Therefore even I started writing romantic comedies and I went to Shashank with an idea. I told him I had penned an idea but after listening to it, he called me after around two hours and told me that it won’t work and then asked me whether I had any other idea or no.”

Suddenly, Dharma director Shashank Khaitan pitched in and stated that the film Bhanu pitched was an exact copy of a previous film Shashank made. “This is not how it happened. The film he pitched was an exact copy of Humpty Sharma (Ki Dulhania).”
He further went on to reveal that he had in fact copied DDLJ, “I told him, ‘I at least copied DDLJ (Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge), you should at least try and make a copy of an iconic film.’”
Wow, has the haze subsided already? Are we all in an accepting mode for films those are a blatant copy of other iconic movies? Have we become one with the lack of originality and are ready to lap up all that we are served with in the name of entertainment? What do you have to say about this?
