Malaika Arora Would Slap Someone If They Called Her 'Item'
Updated : May 03, 2019 01:48 PM ISTMalaika Arora came dancing into hearts with Chaiyan Chaiyan and over the years has given Bollywood many dance numbers and some killer moves to swear by. These songs like Munni Badnaam and Anarkali Disco Chali in which Malaika Arora looked smoldering hot, became popular as item numbers and the actresses featuring in these tracks were called ‘item girls’. In a recent interview with Anupam Chopra Malaika opened up about how she felt about these songs and also said she would turn around and slap someone if they called her an ‘item’.

In the conversation, Malaika said that she never signed up for any of these songs under duress and was always vocal if she felt objectified or uncomfortable. With the #MeToo movement making Bollywood formulas spin their head and making the Bollywood folks more sensitive to the portrayal of women in movies, several filmmakers have taken a stand against including such songs in their movies but Malaika says she belongs to a slightly different school of thought. She defended these songs as tongue and cheek, fun songs in movies which should not be done away with completely.

The perception and terminologies associated with such songs are definitely wrong and Malaika says that actresses need to look at these songs intelligently and be vocal about what they are and aren’t comfortable with. Malaika also mentioned that acting was never her thing and if Chaiyan Chaiyan had never happened she would have been a chef somewhere or would have been a teacher.
How far do you agree with Malaika’s opinion on these songs in Bollywood?
