Teri Baaton Mein Aisa Uljha Jiya Movie Review: Shahid Kapoor & Kriti Sanon’s film is a wholesome entertainer

Aryan (Shahid Kapoor) falls in love with SIFRA (Kriti Sanon) who seems to turn his world upside down and is seemingly the perfect woman for him. The only problem is she is a robot devoid of human emotions and feelings.
The subject of a unique camaraderie between a human and a robot is something that has been explored before in Indian cinema with films like the 2010 Rajinikanth starrer Enthiran. The Amit Joshi and Aradhana Sah directorial Teri Baaton Mein Aisa Uljha Jiya narrates one such unique love story between a human and a beautiful female robot. However, what makes this one a joyride of an entertainer is how well it marries the comedy of errors with the endearing equation of a man with his 'programmed ladylove.'
Teri Baaton Mein Uljha Jiya’s plot revolves around a robotics engineer and programmer Aryan Agnihotri (Shahid Kapoor) who works in collaboration with his aunt Urmila (Dimple Kapadia) the CEO of a robotics company whose aim is to develop robots that not only make the lives of humans better but also develop an interpersonal relationship and a companionship with them. Aryan wants compatibility with his life partner and turns down several rishtas from his family. Until he meets SIFRA (Kriti Sanon). She seems to be perfect for him - beautiful, efficient, dutiful, all-rounder, and knows exactly what he needs. The only problem is she is a robot devoid of human emotions. However, Aryan is smitten and believes that she's the one for him. Will this unique love story between a human and a robot come to fruition?
Director and writer duo Amit Joshi and Aradhana Sah have attempted to create an endearing love story between a human and a humanoid robot that aims to tug at your heartstrings. However, the underlying message of a stark distinction between a human with real flesh, blood, and emotions and a mechanical machine is etched vividly. Not only is Aryan and SIFRA’s relationship curated in an honest and heartwarming manner, but the reaction of Aryan’s family towards the robot is also hilarious but adorable to watch. Despite being dysfunctional, they truly tend to believe this machine to be their ‘ideal Bahu’ with just one justification for her all-rounder tactics ie ‘America Se Hain.’ The comedy of errors which leads to a rather emotionally high-octane climax does not leave any dull moment.
However, the movie does get predictable towards the climax despite the punches and the comic elements. Plus, needless to say, due to the eccentric concept of the show, there are several logic-less elements. You don’t understand how Aryan’s family is so clueless about SIFRA’s identity despite her involuntary approach, why does Dimple Kapadia so bizarrely use her nephew as bait to test SIFRA? And why does the male protagonist not think of the consequences that might follow if he gives his heart to a robot humanoid? And that too for marriage? Quite impractical for a robotics engineer and programmer.
Talking about the performances, Shahid Kapoor is an absolute treat to behold. The actor does the majority of the heavy lifting in the comedic sequences and the emotionally heavy scenes. Be it him being lovestruck with the robot or being afraid to face the consequences of SIFRA’s malfunctions, he is fantastic. You can truly see that the actor put his heart and soul into this. Kriti Sanon on the other hand, looks beautiful and graceful nailing the stoic and mechanical mannerisms of a robot. Her realistic performance manages to blend the thin lines between a human and a robot. The actress particularly hits it out of the park in the climax delivering some of her best scenes from the movie. Dimple Kapadia and Dharmendra prove why they are absolute legends with stellar performances.
Other standout performances include that of Anubha Fatehpuria, Rakesh Bedi, Rajesh Kumar and Ashish Verma. The soundtrack could have struck a better chord with just ‘Laal Peeli Akhiyaan’ and ‘Akhiyaan Gulab’ standing out. Overall, Teri Baaton Mein Aisa Uljha Jiya has its flaws but at the end of the day proves to be a wholesome entertainer.
