'Love is ageless': Arlene Silver reflects on the 46-year age difference with husband Dick Van Dyke

For Dick Van Dyke and his wife Arlene Silver, age is merely a number as they approach nearly seven years of happy marriage. The 98-year-old Van Dyke tied the knot with the 52-year-old Silver in February 2012, a decision he deems "one of the smartest moves I ever made." Van Dyke humorously pointed out the balance in their maturity levels, stating, "She's very mature for her age, and I'm very immature for my age, so it's just about right!" as shared with Parade in 2013.

A Chance Encounter

According to Arlene Silver, she first encountered Dick Van Dyke while working as a makeup artist at the SAG Awards eight years prior. Recalling the moment, she described seeing Dick at the catering table, sporting his bow tie and a broad smile. Their initial interaction involved Dick introducing himself, and Arlene's first question was, "Weren't you in Mary Poppins?"

Although they quickly became friends, the transition to a romantic relationship happened more gradually. Arlene shared that she didn't initially realize the depth of their connection. Wanting to be considerate given Dick's popularity, she would casually plan to visit after work for dinner, not wanting to intrude. However, she discovered that Dick eagerly anticipated these moments, looking forward to her company throughout the day.

From Friendship to Something More

She reminisced about the moment when her perception of him shifted from a friend to something more, "We were working together on a movie during a night shoot, and he was his usual laughing self. However, there was something about the way he was lit, maybe the sweater he was wearing—I thought, 'Wait a minute!' I just felt a little different."

Regarding their substantial 46-year age gap, Silver emphasized that it hasn't posed any challenges in their relationship. She asserted that her husband remains young at heart, describing him as a source of fun and emphasizing his immaturity in a positive way, akin to the wonder of a child. According to her, they both share a youthful spirit, feeling like they're enjoying a second childhood together.

During the interview, she disclosed that she and Van Dyke were collaborating on a show that delves into their marriage and domestic life. While there haven't been subsequent updates, she clarified that it doesn't exactly fit the traditional reality show mold. Instead, they occasionally permit camera crews to capture glimpses of their life at home.
