Kamal Haasan will launch the highly anticipated trailer for Mani Ratnam's 'Ponniyen Selvan 2'

The trailer and music for the upcoming sequel to Ponniyen Selvan are set to be released during a grand event this month in Chennai.

Oscar winner A.R. Rahman, who composed the music for both movies will be performing live at the event, and if that wasn't enough it has now been announced that legendary actor Kamal Hassan will be unveiling the trailer and music during the event.

The producers of the movie have been releasing a steady flow of BTS videos for the sequel. The first focused on actors Vikram, Karthi, and Jaym Ravi who played Aditha Karikalan, Vallavaraiyan Vandiyadevan, and Arulmozhi Varman respectively.

The second focused on actress Trisha Krishnan who plays princess Kundavai and the third BTS video focused exclusively on Vikram's Aditha Karikalan.

The first single from the movie titled Aga Naga was also released last week and has crossed over 11 million views on Youtube.

The music for the movie is composed by A.R Rahman, and the lyrics for the Tamil version were written by Ilango Krishnan and sung by Shakthisree Gopalan.

The song is a romantic melody that focuses on the love between princess Kundavai played by Trisha Krishnan and Vallavaraiyan Vanthiyathevan played by Karthi.

Ponniyen Selvan was a huge critical and commercial success becoming the highest-grossing Tamil movie of 2022 and the fifth highest-grossing Tamil movie of all time with a total box office collection of 500 crores.

The movies are based on Kalki Krishnamurthy's 1955 novel, Ponniyin Selvan, Which focuses on the Chola dynasty specifically Rajaraja Chola and his rise to power.

The franchise was long thought to be unadaptable for the big screen with countless stars and producers trying and failing over the years including MGR and Kamal Hassan.

Ponniyin Selven boasts of an ensemble main cast that includes Vikram, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Jayam Ravi, Karthi, Trisha, Jayaram, Aishwarya Lekshmi, Sobhita Dhulipala, and Prabhu.

Ponniyin Selvan 2 will hit theaters worldwide on April 28th, 2023.
