Exclusive: Shamshera director Karan Malhotra and Ranbir Kapoor react to comparisons with Game of Thrones, KGF
Ranbir Kapoor, Vaani Kapoor and Sanjay Dutt’s much awaited film Shamshera has finally arrived in theatres today. Ahead of the release, the Karan Malhotra directorial was compared to many other period action projects.

Ever since the first look and trailer of Karan Malhotra ’s film Shamshera released, many netizens have been comparing it to popular series Game of Thrones and even to Rocking Star Yash ’s blockbuster hit KGF . Many were even wondering if Vaani Kapoor ’s role Sona will be similar to Katrina Kaif ’s character in the 2018 film Thugs of Hindostan. Well recently Desimartini caught up with the director as well as lead star Ranbir Kapoor and we asked them what their thoughts are on these comparisons.
Ranbir called it ‘great comparisons’ and even Karan was happy to hear this. The director shared, “Its fine. Humaara kaam public domain ka kaam hai. Toh jab bahar niklega toh log bolenge and unke liye hi bana rahe hain toh woh bolenge. Sirf yahi hai ki jab tak Game of Thrones se comparison ho raha hai achhi baat hai, KGF.. please kijiye compare. Lekin compare fir tab kijiye jab poori dekh li ho picture. Toh I think because you’ll get a clearer perspective. Then you can be the best judge because they are judges of our work, usme koi debate nahi hai koi do rai nahi hain.”
He went on to add, “Aur hopefully when they watch the film they’ll enjoy it on its own merit and not kind of try and cast a shadow of any other product on Shamshera.” Well, Shamshera was one of the most awaited films of the year and it has finally released today. While Ranbir will be seen in a double role for the very first time, Sanjay Dutt is portraying the role of the deadly antagonist. Fans are still waiting to find out more about Vaani’s pivotal role.
