The latest Malayalam movie, "Manjummel Boys," is all set to conclude its theatrical run on a high note as it prepares for its highly anticipated streaming debut on Sunday. The film, which initially opened in cinemas without much fanfare, has set several box office benchmarks for upcoming Malayalam movies, emerging as the biggest hit in the history of Malayalam cinema.

"Manjummel Boys" grossed over Rs 96 crore from regions across India, a remarkable feat considering the historical trend of Malayalam movies struggling at the box office outside Kerala. Despite the reputation for producing excellent films, Malayalam movies often struggle to attract larger audiences when released in theatres. However, "Manjummel Boys" defied this trend by surpassing the Rs 90 crore mark at the domestic box office.

Reports indicate that "Manjummel Boys" earned over Rs 76 crore in Kerala alone while making history in Tamil Nadu with ticket sales exceeding Rs 63 crore. Written and directed by Chidambaram, the film surprised everyone with its reception among Tamil audiences, providing much-needed relief to theatres in the state amid a dearth of exciting new content in Tamil cinema.

The inclusion of significant Tamil dialogues and its pop cultural link to Kamal Haasan's classic "Gunaa," facilitated easy connection and appreciation among Tamil audiences. Additionally, the film garnered over Rs 15 crore in ticket sales in Karnataka and reportedly outperformed "Premalu" by earning over Rs 14 crore in the Telugu states. It also enjoyed exceptional success in international territories, with total overseas collections exceeding Rs 73 crore.

After an extended theatrical run of 72 days, "Manjummel Boys" has amassed over Rs 241 crore, cementing its status as the biggest commercial success in the history of Malayalam cinema thus far.

"Manjummel Boys" will be available for streaming on Disney+Hotstar on May 5.
