Paris Olympics 2024- Vinesh Phogat gets disqualified from participating in the final match for gold
In what can be described as the most heart-breaking news of the entire ongoing Olympics games, Vinesh Phogat, who was India’s brightest hope for a gold medal, has now been disqualified from furthering in the game and taking part in the wrestling championship to compete for the gold medal in the finals.
The reason, based on which, Vinesh Phogat had got disqualified was because of her being overweight. As per a news report in Indian Express, it has been reported that, after she was found being overweight by 2 kgs, an extremely heartbroken Vinesh Phogat pushed all her limits and pulled all stops to lose weight and get qualified. This was followed by her cycling, jogging all night long without even a minute’s rest. But, all of this went in vain as Vinesh Phogat got disqualified as she was found overweight by 100 grams.
In an official statement issued by The Indian Olympic Association, it stated, ‘It is with regret that the Indian contingent shares news of the disqualification of Vinesh Phogat from the Women’s Wrestling 50kg class. Despite the best efforts by the team through the night, she weighed in a few grams over 50kg this morning. No further comments will be made by the contingent at this time. The Indian team requests you respect Vinesh’s privacy. It would like to focus on the competitions on hand’.
In this moment of heartbreak, there was India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi who immediately took to social media and consoled Vinesh Phogat. In his tweet, he wrote, ‘Vinesh, you are a champion among champions! You are India's pride and an inspiration for each and every Indian. Today's setback hurts. I wish words could express the sense of despair that I am experiencing. At the same time, I know that you epitomise resilience. It has always been your nature to take challenges head on. Come back stronger! We are all rooting for you. @Phogat_Vinesh’.
