When the success of Vidya Balan's Kahaani made Aamir Khan delay Talaash and change the climax of his film

Vidya Balan ’s Kahaani arrival in cinemas ten years ago today remains a milestone moment in modern film history. The film is not noteworthy for just making Bollywood wake up to the potential of women led films but for genuinely being an excellent thriller, the likes of which are a rare to come across in an industry obsessed with machismo.

The Sujoy Ghosh directed film earned appreciation from both the industry and the audience but the first ripples of its success perhaps affected Aamir Khan ’s film Talaash too. According to many reports dating back to 2012, Aamir postponed the release of his film by several months after Kahaani released and turned out to be a surprise hit at the box office.

Talaash much like Kahaani was a crime thriller which eventually arrived in cinemas in late November 2012. Apparently, Aamir’s film initially had an ending similar to that of Kahaani and but post the arrival of Vidya’s film the Bollywood superstar made a move to change the ending of Talaash. By this point, the shoot of Talaash was all wrapped up and most of the post production was also done but the scenes were reshot to give the movie a different climax.

While Aamir stated the reason behind the delay in Talaash’s release to be his busy schedule with his show Satyamev Jayate which he began work on after wrapping up the movie, he was said to be busy salvaging the plot of Talaash to make it edgier post Kahaani’s release.

Talaash releasing too close to Kahaani could have led to many comparisons and douse the experience of Aamir’s film and therefore the star apparently wanted to space out the gap between the films.

While Talaash at the end of the day did manage to become a hit, Kahaani’s success rattling a star of Aamir’s stature certainly speaks volumes for the kind of impact the Vidya Balan film created.
