Aanand L Rai Says “It’s Too Early” To Talk About The Cast Of His Next Directorial

For the past few days, there has been a lot of speculation about Aanand L Rai’s next directorial. Rumour has it that Deepika Padukone, Alia Bhatt and Shah Rukh Khan will be starring in it. But the director refuses to confirm the news. “Before you make a new film, you have to live life. So, I am doing that. I am working on my script and meeting actors. I am enjoying the process. Let’s not jump the gun. Wait for the announcement. It’s too early to talk about the cast,” he says.

Of late, Aanand has started backing other directors’ films as a producer, a move that many have called Aanand’s effort to create a ‘film factory’. “I get scared thinking of the word ‘factory’. They must have intended to write ‘family’,” he says, adding that his intention is to “work with like-minded people”.

As a producer, Aanand has a few films lined up. One of them will feature Abhay Deol and Diana Penty. “I wanted to cast an unusual pair. I thought it was the right time to challenge Diana [after Cocktail; 2012],” says Aanand. Another project will bring back Ayushmann Khurrana and Bhumi Pednekar together again, after Dum Laga Ke Haisha (DLKH). “I was impressed with the fearlessness with which Bhumi played her part in DLKH. And Ayushmann, with just a few films, comes across as an experienced actor. He isn’t trying to achieve too many things in his career,” he says.

Ask him if he is thinking of making a third instalment of the Tanu Weds Manu series, and he says, “The only thing that can push me to make a film is a story. I won’t make a third part of that series just because it is a brand, or because it will work [at the box office]. Let’s not treat it like a series. Right now, there is no part three. I think I am done with the characters, at least for now.”
