On being asked if Vicky Donor was merely a self play and DLKH the real challenge, the actor accepted and said, “When Vicky Donor released, people said 'it was very easy for Ayushman, he is Punjabi after all.’ In fact, for me it was like sleepwalking through the character. Real hard work came in when I had films like Dum Laga Ke Haisha and Hawaizaada in front of me. I was playing a character which was just not me. I am an urban guy who has been born and brought up in Chandigarh”.

Talking about how he got everything settled, the actor revealed it was his mother who helped him get the right tone. “My Punjabi accent wasn't going away even while I was reading through the dialogues of Dum Laga Ke Haisha. I had to get the accent as well as the emotion right. Since my mother is an M.A. in Hindi and she speaks only in Hindi, I got some help from her”, he revealed.
