Director Maneesh Sharma has revealed that he wanted ‘Fan’ to be his first film but his mentor and producer Aditya Chopra wanted Maneesh to prove himself first. “So, I made Band Baaja Baaraat. Then Shah Rukh was busy with other films”, said the director. After that, he helmed a few other projects till he got the opportunity to make ‘Fan’.

The director revealed, “When I had conceptualised this film, I knew that I wanted the same actor to play the two roles without being lookalikes. Gaurav is kind of like Aryan and kind of not. Creatively we were all very excited, but then when the time came to actually shoot the film, we didn’t know how to make it happen. We were talking to possibly the biggest make-up and visual effect technicians in the world. And, most of them told me—‘we’ve tried doing this but it’s not possible’. Apparently they had shelved projects because it’s not easy to make someone look younger”.

Talking about working with Shah Rukh Khan, Maneesh shared, “He might have a lot more experiences, but he behave almost exactly like the newcomers I have worked with. He has the same energy and enthusiasm, but with that much more experience. Besides his stardom, he has led a very intense life. When I was directing Gaurav, I really thought I was working with a 25-year-old. And, when we shot the bits with Aryan, I felt like there was a mature and patient older person around me. That’s the kind of distinction Shah Rukh managed to bring to the characters”. ‘Fan’ hit the screens on April 15 and has been doing quite well at the box office.
