Ronit Roy on sports biopics: Filmmakers tend to use and dry out that avenue

Actor Ronit Roy was said to be part of a sports drama titled Saat Kadam [also starring Amit Sadh and Deeksha Seth], and the film even went on floors in November 2015 but never saw the light of the day. However, Ronit says that he would rather not talk about it.

“I don’t know what’s happening to the film, so I’m not sure what I can share more details. All I can say is that the story revolves around the generation gap and shows the relationship between a father and his son,” says Ronit, who was seen in Kaabil that released in January this year, and later in Machine that released in March.

Though Ronit says biopics are the “next big thing”, asked whether he would like to portray the role of a sportsman in any biopic made in future, he says he has never given it serious thought. The 51-year-old says, “I have never thought who I want to play on screen. I am quite a free flow kind of a guy. I like life to unravel itself to me rather than thinking about what I want to do. Maybe somebody will think of something and they will think of me and maybe things will happen...or maybe not. So why break your head over it?”

On whether films on sports and sports personalities have become a trend in Bollywood today, Ronit shares, “That’s the nature of our film industry, when a particular kind of film has worked, filmmakers tend to completely use and dry out that avenue. They try and milk that opportunity to its best. So a lot of people might be thinking about subjects like that.”

After two releases this year, Ronit is now busy working on third with franchise of Sarkaar and then will shoot for the film Lucknow Central with Farhan Akhtar and Diana Penty. “So it’s a quite a packed year,” quips the actor.
