Following the success of his period drama ‘Bajirao Mastani’, Sanjay Leela Bhansali will be returning to the genre for his next project, according to Mirror. The movie has been tentatively titled ‘Padmavati’ and will focus on Alauddin Khilji, the second ruler of the Khilji dynasty. It will tell the story of Alauddin’s obsessive love for queen of Mewar, Padmavati.

Sanjay will be reuniting with Prakash Kapadia who will write the script for the project. The duo previously worked on ‘Bajirao Mastani’ which starred Ranveer Singh, Priyanka Chopra and Deepika Padukone. “It's a very interesting story and will release on December 15, 2017”, a source close to the team stated about the new project.

Back in 2008, the director developed an opera-ballad titled 'Padmavati'. It was performed at Theatre du Chatelet, one of the most prestigious opera houses in Paris. The ballad received a standing ovation from the crowd. If that is something to go by, the big screen film will be another huge hit for the director.
