Actor Taapsee Pannu who made her Bollywood debut with the 2012 film Chashme Baddoor admits that it was a conscious choice to be part of a commercial potboiler at the onset of her career rather than opting for some art house film.

“Had I started off with a Baby (2015) or Pink (2016), it would have probably got be labelled an off-beat film actor. Once I entered the industry with a commercial film and had a commercial success to my credit, I felt I was ready to show them something more and different. That’s why I had to take a forced back door entry in Baby,” says Taapsee.

The actor who will again share screen space with actor Akshay Kumar in the prequel to Baby, Naam Shabana, believes in getting her work noticed and not follow any particular trends. “There are so many actors who join the film industry and they are not even good looking or talented.It’s difficult to leave an impact because filmmakers don’t know to what extent they can trust a newcomer. I knew that people should slowly see me as someone who can act and at the same time, have commercial value as well,” adds Taapsee.

The actor did many regional films before entering Bollywood, but she rues the fact that when it comes to Hindi films, previous work doesn’t get noticed. “It’s ironic that no matter if you are a newcomer or have done a dozen of films in the Southern industry, you are treated the same. Not many people notice the fact that an actor has done so much work in other languages that he/she doesn’t even know. So that struggle is always there in the beginning,” says Taapsee., who will be next be seen in Naam Shabana.
