Ugly makes a Hard Hitting impact at the Leh Film Fest

A few weeks back when Anurag Kashyap’s Ugly was screened at the Cannes film festival, it made a thunderous impact on the audience. The film was recently screen in India at the Leh Film Fest where it had reportedly left the audiences totally numb.

Screened for a large audience of Filmmakers, army trainees and the media, Ugly ended up leaving everyone speechless. It may not be fair for us to have a script analysis here since it may reveal the essence but the film deals with a thriller relationship held around a tragedy. The director also requested the media to not reveal the story, “Please do not reveal anything about the film on social media or in the media as it will affect the film when it releases” he said. The release of the film has been held back for a long time since Anurag Kashyap stood firm on his stand of fighting the case against ‘statutory warning for no smoking being attached’. The case he has apparently lost and now plans the release in September.

“Everyone was gung-ho after ‘Gangs Of Wasseypur’, and that’s when I thought that ‘Now’s the time to do it’. I kind of made ‘Ugly’ without telling a lot of people because knowing how scared our producers and studios are, they wouldn’t have let the film be made,” Kashyap said. The producer/director also told as to why the film was re-edited, “Someone had seen some rushes of ‘Ugly’ in February or March (this year) and asked me to rush it for Cannes. And the film has been edited again after the Cannes screening. Also, I was fighting a court battle, which I have lost… so now, ‘Ugly’ is finally releasing Sep 19 with the ‘Smoking is injurious to health’ logo, which I totally detest,” he said. The filmmaker who was extremely happy to be at the Kashmiri soil said he was proud to be a part of the third edition of the Film Fest. Scheduled for a release in September, Ugly stars Ronit Roy, Rahul Bhat and Tejaswini Kolhapure in prominent roles.
