Indian mathematician S. Ramanujan will be getting a biopic called The Man Who Knew Infinity. The film will star Dev Patel and Jeremy Irons in lead roles. It will be based on the book by Robert Kanigel, published in 1991.

A mathematician with the Indian Statistical Institute (ISI), Shanta Laishram said, “Even if you don’t solve a math problem, it can give you new ideas, allow you to see new connections. So when other people rediscovered the proof of Ramanujan’s formulas and identities, it became breakthroughs. Robert Langlands, a famous mathematician at IAS, Princeton, made a number of interesting conjectures; his ideas gave new insights for other mathematicians”. The story will follow the letter sent to GH Hardy by S. Ramanujan who pointed out areas where the mathematician could improve.

After reading and ignoring the letter, GH Hardy teamed up with the self-taught 23-year-old mathetician. He took care of Ramanujan’s tenure in Cambridge. Ramanujan was a Tamil-Brahmin and often thanked the family deity, Namagiri, for his accomplishments.
