Shimmering beads and jewels in pale hues and dresses in bold tones brightened an unusually dreary rainy afternoon in Hollywood on Sunday as the film industry's stars hit the glamorous Oscars red carpet

Jennifer Lopez  opted for shimmering Elie Saab dresses - Lopez preferred a plunging bronze, full-skirted gown while Stone went for a light green sparkling fitted dress that offset her red hair.

Rita Ora arrived at the red carpet in  a midnight blue gown.

Rosamund Pike  is wearing red Givenchy red gown with Lorraine Schwartz jewels.

Scarlett Johansson wore a curve-hugging deep green Versace gown.

Naomi Watts in a sequined black bandeaux at the back of a bibbed look by Armani Prive.

In an off-shoulder black and silvery grey gown,  Reese Witherspoon took grinning photos of herself in front of the bleachers as fans whooped with delight.

Lady Gaga, who is singing in a "Sound of Music" tribute during the show, wore a space-age sparkling white and silver Azzedine Alaia gown with a full skirt -- and bright red gloves that seemed better suited for washing dishes.

Lupita Nyong'o -- the best supporting actress Oscar winner last year for "12 Years a Slave" and a red carpet darling -- wore a custom pearl-encrusted sleeveless Calvin Klein gown
