10 Years of Krrish: Here’s Why India’s First Superhero Was So Special!

While kids back in the 90’s had the likes of Shaktiman every Sunday to gratify their TV fascination, for some apparent reasons, India had to wait too long to get its first cinematic superhero. A superhero, who like any other superhero in the world could fly, fight, protect and be the kind of human being superheroes normally are.

We patiently waited, long enough in the hopes of being treated with a hero who could really step up and represent India in the league of superheroes. It was only until someone like Rakesh Roshan decided to let all go, invest his time and money and effort and come out with what could possibly be India’s most desirable superhero ever. Who better than Hrithik Roshan could have made for a fine, chiseled superhero?

So after 2 long years of dedicated hard work, crores spent, Hrithik almost escaping death in an unforeseen accident and a never lasting tirade of adversities, on 23rd June 2006, India’s first cinematic superhero ‘Krrish’ was introduced to the audiences. As we look back at the film implausibly realizing that it has been 10 LONG YEARS already, we take a look at what made Krrish such a special film that India can be proud of.

    Never Before Seen Action

The film in larger prospects upgraded the bar of action in India. With the body of work put behind this colossal project, while the expectations around the action were sky high, film’s unit didn’t disappoint either by backing it up with fascinating action. Krrish had the kind of action design that Indian audiences were not accustomed to. It not only came as a major surprise to the viewers but also took the level of action design, VFX and graphics at a different level.

Koi Mil Gaya (The Sequel Factor)

Having come across as an ‘out n out’ action superhero movie, the film had an X factor that very much connected it to the audiences. It was a sequel to a very popular film that came 3 years prior to Krrish, Koi Mil Gaya. The film despite being an independently fresh story so well laced with the original that it became more of a special movie since sequels weren’t too popular around back then. The film dared to explore the sequel format and very successfully laid its grip over the audiences. Having introduced us to India’s first alien called Jaadu, Rakesh Roshan also chose to make India’s first superhero film.

    India’s Foray Into Technology

Flying around places with cables that never previously were explored in India, Krrish was pulling off action sequences heavily relying on technology. With the kind of CGI, VFX and other technologies involved in the movie, Krrish was officially India’s foray into the league where movies weren’t just made on the field, an equal contribution in the post production was also required. With segments talking about travelling in the future and having the ability to change it, Krrish dared to bank on the potential of science fiction working bigtime.

    The Making of a Superhero

While the film was predominantly shot in Singapore and some other parts of Asia, Rakesh Roshan as writer-director made sure it was an Indian superhero getting ready to take on the world. The transformation from Krishna to Krrish was something that gelled up well with Indian audiences. From a boy who’s living in a small hilly village who falls in love with a girl and to pursue it, he travels to Singapore, this in a nutshell narrates how an Indian superhero was born. From a protective son to a protective lover, Krrish had the making of a complete INDIAN Superhero.

    Hrithik Roshan

You can’t argue on the fact that no one other than Hrithik Roshan could have made for a better superhero. The chiseled body, the perfect look, the dance moves, the emotions and a complete performance! Hrithik Roshan proved that he was meant to be this superhero since he was brilliant in both the roles he essayed Krrish and Rohit Mehra. Well supported by Naseeruddin Shah as the villain and other actors, Hrithik convinced the kids he is their one true Superhero that they should look up to.

10 years down the line and India hasn’t had a second superhero yet. While many attempts were made to cash in on the less explored region in the country, the only film that will truly define the superhero culture in India would be Krrish. The only film that ever came to being half as exciting as Krrish was Krrish 3 in 2013. Clear enough?
