Now that Udta Punjab has escaped from the Censor Board’s grasp, it’s time to turn our attention to another A-certificate film in Bollywood.

The sex comedy Great Grand Masti, which releases next month, comes with an A certificate for its suggestive content. Not only that, the Censor Board had ordered several cuts for the film because of ‘highly vulgar and objectionable’ scenes and dialogues.

But learning from the Udta Punjab debacle, the makers of Great Grand Masti refused to give up just yet.

Rather than go to the Revising Committee, the makers of the films went directly to the Film Certification Appellate Tribunal (FCAT) appealing for the removal of the cuts.

    And the Tribunal listened!

The Tribunal has restored most of the cuts in Great Grand Masti and has passed the film with just an Adults certificate.

According to reports, The Tribunal examined three recent sex comedies Mastizaade, Kya Kool Hain Hum 3 and Grand Masti. Seeing the content that was shown in these films, the Tribunal reversed the decision of the Censor Board.

The decision shows the growing redundancy of the CBFC. Udta Punjab and Great Grand Masti might well have ended the ancient and regressive process of censoring.

As for now, it’s another victory for freedom of expression.
