RANKED: 10 Best Comedy Bollywood Movies Of All Time
Though as of late it seems that Bollywood has totally given up on making a genuine comic film, comedy is something our films have nearly always done well. Even now, when slapstick humour and crass jokes are sold off as comedy, there are moments of genuine comic brilliance peppered throughout the medium.
In simpler words, Bollywood can do comedy--it always has.
So now that is established, we went ahead and tried to find out what are the best 10 are. The task was much more complicated than we thought it would be.
Without further adieu, here's the list:
#10 DELHI BELLY
It announced its unregretful intentions from the moment go and came as a much needed breather for the audiences who were in search for some authentic adult content. A combination of crime, drama, comedy and chaos, Delhi Belly was a perfect escape for a different audience and largely appealed to the urban viewers.
It’s not every day that Gulzaar would direct a movie and when he decides to adapt Shakespearean classic Comedy of Errors into a cinematic experience, you can expect some quality on the cards. With Sanjeev Kumar and Deven Verma both playing double roles, Angoor perhaps told us how confusion and chaos can make for a rib-tickling comedy.
#8 HERO NO.1
There’s not just one Govinda-David Dhawan film that can fit into the fiddle but Hero No. 1 in terms of entertainment quotient was notches above all. Borrowed heavily from the premise of Rajesh Khanna’s Bawarchi, the film never took itself too seriously and entertained us in the best way possible. The comedy was much higher than the standards set in the 90’s.
#7 CHUPKE CHUPKE
Another classic comedy that came out from the school of Hrishikesh Mukherjee, Chupke Chupke was perhaps the most fulfilling ‘family’ comedy experience we could have got. Starring Dharmendra, Amitabh Bachchan, Utpal Dutt, Sharmila Tagore, Asrani and more, Chupke Chupke was all about keeping the mood happy and making us laugh.
When Bollywood was coming out of the golden era, it made sure to add another piece of unapologetic comedy and woo the audiences. From Sunil Dutt, Kishore Kumar & Om Prakash to Saira Bano and Mahmood, each and every character of Padosan was sketched to be a dose of laughter.
#5 MUNNABHAI M.B.B.S
While it is widely known to have introduced us to the concept of Jaadu Ki Jhappi and love above everything, the concept of a gangster turning doctor was hilariously presented by Raju Hirani. The Munna-Circuit chemistry, the Boman Irani’s brand of comic timing, the laughter therapy, Munna Bhai MBBS has set itself to be one of the best comedies of 21st century.
#4 ANDAZ APNA APNA
The cult comedy has distinction attached to its name and the film has given us Indian viewers a million reasons to laugh. This is one film whose characters (however small) have become a significant part of the history and its cartoon like narration has made it to be one of the funniest comic experiences of all time.
You can’t put Hrishikesh Mukherjee out of the picture if you’re talking comedy! Released in 1979, the Amol Palekar-Utpal Dutt starrer Golmaal is one film that has been attempted to be remade a number of times in Bollywood. The very setting of the film wrapped around a rib tickling execution has been a fine dose of laughter for audiences for years.
#2 HERA PHERI
The film that brought the house down and still continuous to do so, Priyadarshan’s Hera Pheri is one film that introduced us to the trio of Akshay Kumar, Suniel Shetty and Paresh Rawal. Unabashedly funny, this film will always be regarded as one of the best comedies ever made in India.
#1 JAANE BHI DO YAARON
The cult classic from the 80’s was slapping the system in its face and yet taking the road of laughter. Directed by Kundan Shah, the low budget comedy starred some of the finest actors of the industry and shed out a piece of comedy that we could be proud of. No funny sequence in the industry has been able to match the climax of Jaane Bhi Do Yaaro as yet.
Honourary mentions: 3 Idiots, Hungama, Piku, Satte Pe Satta, Chachi 420
