Of the 50 odd 100 crore grossers that Bollywood takes pride in having produced over the years, only a handful of them have done justice to our leading ladies. In an industry where Salman Khan taking his shirt off is worth 200 crores of business alone, it is kind of tough for the likes of Kangana Ranaut to survive. Bollywood isn’t female centric and is only beginning to carve a less misogynistic and regressive path now.
While superstardom is what sells in India, it fills everybody’s heart with gratification when a film like Queen scintillates at the box office. Anyway, everything is not as bad as it looks like really! The quality films that have done reasonably well at the box office are a result of an excellent set of contributions made by the actresses.
So here are ten 100 crore grossers where actresses were an equal force:
Box Office – 388 crores

The highest grossing Bollywood movie of all time is a female centric sports drama that pleasantly surprised by a superstar’s restrain to highlight himself on screen. Film had equal contribution from the likes of Fatima Sana Sheikh, Sanya Malhotra and Sakshi Tanwar.
Box office – 184.16 crores

The Sanjay Leela Bhansali movie wouldn’t have surfaced as such a big hit if it wasn’t for the fabulous performances of its female cast Deepika Padukone and Priyanka Chopra. The period romantic drama was a collective success of its enriching cast.
Box Office – 150.77 crores

The one man show performance by Kangana Ranaut made this romantic comedy such a mesmerizing watch that audiences couldn’t just get enough of it. The very success of the movie marked the fact that viewers were willing to consume female dominated cinema if they served an ample dose of entertainment.
Box Office – 116.33 crores

The almost identical crew of Bajirao Mastani had already made their first 100 crore association with this passionate romantic drama in 2013. The success was attributed to the excellent performance of its lead Ranveer Singh and Deepika Padukone.
Box Office – 112.48 crores

The last Karan Johar directorial that featured Ranbir Kapoor, Anushka Sharma and Aishwarya Rai in the lead was primarily remembered for its treatment followed by some wonderful performances by its ladies. The urbanely targeted movie had no stardom attached to its success as such.
Box Office – 227.13 crores

While it’s tough to steal the thunder when someone like an SRK is leading opposite you, Deepika Padukone’s character from Chennai Expressed just stayed with you. While the comic romance was laid on the shoulders of Shah Rukh Khan, Deepika wasn’t sidelined in the scheme of things at all.
Box Office – 112.15 crores

While the film mostly banked on its fine content, the contribution by Priyanka Chopra and Ileana D’Cruz was on another level, the former in particular. The Ranbir Kapoor starrer was well received for it provided a very soulful experience to its audience and heroines were a major aspect to that.
Box office - 105.74 crores

The dance based movie directed by Remo D’Souza was essentially the story of Varun Dhawan and Prabhu Deva. However the filmmaker didn’t falter in bringing out enough of Shraddha’s talent to light. If anything, the actress had an equally strong role to portray in the narrative.
Box Office – 188.57 crores

The coming of age ride of this Ayan Mukerji directorial wasn’t attributed to any kind of stardom whatsoever. While actors like Ranbir and Deepika were popular enough by then, the film worked for several other reasons. Deepika Padukone and Kalki Koechlin had meaty characters to portray and played crucial elements of the story.
Box Office – 102.13 crores

The much appreciated romantic drama starring Arjun Kapoor and Alia Bhatt is fondly remembered for Alia’s amusing performance that served too well to make the film this big. She had more than carried half the weight of the movie and was instrumental in helping it cross 100 crores.
If we kind of think and settle, movies with equal female dominance naturally turn out to be good, no?
