Movie Review - Ae Dil Hai Mushkil

Karan Johar’s Ae Dil Hai Mushkil is finally hitting the theatres today and the film is much awaited for several reasons. What seems to be an intriguing tale of one sided love, stars Ranbir Kapoor, Anushka Sharma, Aishawrya Rai Bachchan and Fawad Khan in key roles. Everthing from the music to the trailer has managed to hit the right note.

Ae Dil Hai Mushkil is a very mature take on modern day relationships. It will pinch the commitment phobic, and is like a mirror image for all one sided lovers. Ae Dil is not what it looked like in the trailer. It’s not an out and out intense movie like it appears to be in the trailer. Ten minutes into the film, you’ll be giggling, with back to back surprises and some really refreshing twist to the intense tale.

Thumbs up for Lisa Haydon’s short stint where she’ll remind you of Lara Aunty from YJHD. The few minutes of Shah Rukh Khan in the movie are very well scripted and Karan has made sure that he leaves an impact. He says, “Dare huye log aksar alfazon ke peechhe chhupte hain,” which somehow sums up all our guilt and introvert streaks. He renders the famous dialogue of the film, “Ek tarfa pyaar ki takat…” and you’ll lose focus on Ranbir and Ash when SRK is in the frame. He’s superb and his role is crisp. Aishwarya Rai Bachchan fares well in her role as a failed poet. She’s tried hard to deliver all the shayaris as a shyara and she succeeds to some extent. Your eyes will be on her clothes and breathtaking home all the time, where I’d like to give full marks to the art director. Karan’s movies are scenery, frame by frame, such that even Alizeh’s or Ayan’s messed up houses look beautiful. Get over Iktara, you’ll not get home décor goals from ADHM, especially for a bachelor’s pad.

Ranbir Kapoor as Ayan, the one sided lover who finds a rebound in Ash has put in tremendous effort in this film. Anushka Sharma however, steals the show in Ae Dil Hai Mushkil! Her eyes do the talking which proves she’s come a long way since Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi and her contemporaries better not undermine her talent. She looks drop dead gorgeous in all frames. Girls would want to steal all her kurtas, jackets, scarfs and boots. Her entire wardrobe is the most outstanding thing about ADHM’s styling.

Fawad Khan has a considerably shorter yet important role in the movie. There are surprises for his fans in store which they can see for themselves when they watch the movie. Wait until you see those gifs and screen shots floating!

At some point of time you may feel that you’re not watching a film, it’s just a journey which we all go through. Nothing happens back to back in the film, every moment is spanned over a few years and so do relationships. We need to give them time, and ADHM’s best message is to cherish your one sided love but let go off it too, when needed.

“Tumhara ishq itna kambakht hai ki mera kam pad gaya!”

Love this dialogue from the film where K Jo highlights how we measure and compete with the intensity of our love, and that in fact is the truth of life.

Pyar cancer ki tarah hota ha

“Bin bulaye ata hai aur maar ke chala jata hai” K Jo nails it with the dialogues and shayaris which are going to be in massive demand, which he’s co-written with Niranjan Iyenger.

ADHM is a family movie and most of all a treat for all young hearts that’re fighting with their emotions and love lives. It’s a brilliant take on modern day relationships. Karan has come a long way as a director and sometimes you forget how intelligently he’s studied the psychology of modern day generation and their outlook towards relationships.

You can surely spend this weekend at the movies and watch this one with a smile on your face.
