Ritesh Batra picks Oscar Winners 2014
Ritesh Batra, the acclaimed director of The Lunchbox, is occupied with the pre-release rush of his film’s release in the United States this weekend. He found time out of his hectic schedule to speak to me about this year’s Oscars and where his film stands amidst the glory and the mess. Most importantly, when I geeked out about his film in a semi-fanboy mode, he was kind enough to not judge me for it.
Still vexed at what went down with the Oscar submission debacle last year, he further adds that it was never about the mythical big prize. It is about getting more eyeballs and enabling the younger generation of filmmakers to gain access to foreign funding for Indian films.
Ritesh was adamant these are not his predictions for the Oscars but more of a singling out of his favorites. If he was voting, this is what he would vote for.
Here’s what Ritesh Batra would pick as this year’s Oscar winners:
BEST PICTURE
A tie between American Hustle & 12 Years A Slave!
BEST DIRECTOR
Alfonso Cuaron for Gravity
BEST ACTOR
Christian Bale from American Hustle
BEST ACTRESS
Cate Blanchett from Blue Jasmine

and Bradley Cooper from American Hustle
BEST SUPPORTING ACTRESS
Jennifer Lawrence from American Hustle

BEST ADAPTED SCREENPLAY

Ritesh is clearly a fan of American Hustle and 12 Years A Slave. He also admired Gravity and Her.
