History repeats itself as Pepsi releases its new protest themed commercial which premiered on Tuesday starring Kendall Jenner leaving people around the world in raging wrath; just like 28 years back when Madonna hit the screens in over 40 countries, burning crosses and drawing the ire of religious groups as part of Pepsi’s controversial ad in April 1989.

Fast forward to present day, Pepsi’s “live for now moment’s Anthem featuring Skip Marley’s song “Lions” has triggered a minefield of critiques like HBO series Girls star Lena Dunham, Martin Luther King’s daughter Bernice King as well as the Queen of Pop Madonna to leave a Name tag on Jenner’s Pepsi ad as “TONE-DEAF”

In the commercial, The Keeping Up with the Kardashians reality star abandons her photo-shoot to join an army of protesters who were merrily hymning while breakdancing down the streets sipping on Pepsi trivializing The Black lives Matter movement as well as the anti-Donald Trump resistance movement. Jenner then hands a can of Pepsi over to a policeman in riot gear which alone seems to solve the purpose of the riot and ignites the crowd in Cheers. Kendall’s gesture infuriated social media as it resembled  the Year-winning image of Baton Rouge, Louisiana, protester Ieshia Evans, who stands peacefully as she is arrested by police officers dressed in riot gear. Bernice King took to twitter expressing her grief, tweeting: “If only Daddy would have known about the power of #Pepsi.”

Hours after the brand pulled Kendall Jenner’s protest-themed commercial, Madonna, shared a throwback photo of herself holding a can of Pepsi’s rival Coca-Cola slamming Jenner and the Brand captioning, The 1999 Grammy Awards photo with a first place gold medal emoji, and an extreme close-up of the red can to further emphasize her point of view.

Though Pepsi washed its hands off the dirt  claiming that this is a global ad which reflects people from different walks of life coming together in a spirit of harmony, the Social media continues to erupt in flames of dismay and hasn’t spared Jenner who played no role in the creative process. Mortified by the backlash the 21 year old deleted all of her tweets related to the commercial and continues to maintain a low profile by leaning on her family for support.
