The Remake Of Aladdin Is On The Card And Twitter Is Trying To Get These Two Bollywood Actresses To Be Cast As Jasmine!

In October, Disney hired director Guy Ritchie to helm their upcoming live-action Aladdin remake. But the bigger question now is who’s going to play the lead roles. Twitter has already begun a campaign to cast either Priyanka Chopra or Deepika Padukone as Princess Jasmine.

Disney is on a roll with their live-action remakes of classic animated films. In March, they will release Beauty and the Beast, starring Emma Watson. In 2016, The Jungle Book almost made a billion dollars worldwide. So yes, it makes sense for them to keep it up.

The next step, of course, is fan casting. And Twitter has clear favourites. Even though neither Priyanka, Deepika (or Frieda Pinto, whose name is also being floated around) are ethnically correct for the role, they’re still big favourites online. And for the role of Genie (originally played by the late Robin Williams) fans are setting their sights on Dwayne Johnson (who will co-star with Priyanka in Baywatch, and is remaking Robin Williams’ Jumanji).

As for Aladdin, there’s a wave of support for recent Oscar nominee Dev Patel to bag the role.

These days, when cultural diversity is a hot topic in Hollywood, casting a white actor to play any of these roles will no doubt attract controversy. Remember #OscarsSoWhite, and that time when Leonardo DiCaprio was rumoured to be playing the Persian poet Rumi?

Here are some tweets we found:

Both Deepika Padukone and Priyanka Chopra have made inroads into Hollywood. Priyanka stars in the popular TV show Quantico and will play the villain in May’s Baywatch movie. Deepika meanwhile, recently starred opposite Vin Diesel in xXx: Return of Xander Cage, which has made more than $300 million worldwide since its mid-January release.
