One of the most awaited and anticipated award nights of the year, the 92nd Academy Awards aka the Oscars kick started with a bang as popular celebrities graced the prestigious red carpet in their ravishing ensembles. While some kept it classy with somber colors, others brightened up our day with a colorful pop. However, one particular ensemble which totally stands out is definitely Natalie Portman’s. Set to present Best Adapted Screenplay alongside Timothee Chalamet, she paid a tribute to female directors in her own special way.

The Lucy in the Sky star donned a custom-made Dior gown with a beautiful cape on top, which had names of female directors embroidered on it. In a viral video from the red carpet, Natalie can be seen explaining that these are the names of those female directors who have not been recognized for their incredible work. The names on the cape include Lorene Scafaria (Hustlers), Lulu Wang (The Farewell), Greta Gerwig (Little Women), Marielle Heller (A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood), Melina Matsoukas (Queen & Slim), Alma Har’el (Honey Boy), Céline Sciamma (Portrait of a Lady on Fire) and Mati Diop (Atlantics).

Sadly, the last time that a female director won the Best Director Award was Kathryn Bigelow for The Hurt Locker in 2010. It has been exactly a decade. Well, this year the nominees for the Best Director award include Todd Phillips for Joker, Martin Scorsese for The Irishman, Quentin Tarantino for Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, Sam Mendes for 1917 and Bong Joon Ho for Parasite. Who are you rooting for?
