2017 May Have Been Terrible But It’s Given Us 8 SUPER HIT Comedies
While this wicked and dreadful year has brought biggest of the distributors to tears by testing their movies at the box office, there’s a funny element to 2017 that we haven’t really spoken about as yet. After Varun Dhawan’s Judwaa 2 became one of the highest grossing movies in the recent times, Diwali proved why families will never stop coming to the theaters to watch comedies. It’s not just Rohit Shetty’s Golmaal Again that has set this trend straight, box office 2017 has been very welcoming to comedies while most other genres have struggled.
Putting things in perspective, we’ve only got a handful of successful movies at the box office but it’s interesting how almost every comedy that released this year has found takers. The comedies that got accepted by the audiences not only went on to recover their costs but ended up being super hits at large.
So before 2017 gets over, here’s a reminder how 2017 has given 8 successful comedy movies:
Jolly LLB 2 – 109 Crores
The early Akshay Kumar release was a taut courtroom drama that had its tonality wrapped in comedy. The film with a solid box office figure of 109 crores is one of the most successful films of the year.
Hindi Medium – 69 Crores
No one had expected this Irrfan Khan-Saba Qamar starrer to make more than 100 crores globally but it did. The surprise success of the year ended up being one of the most profitable films of the year thanks to its comic element.
Mubarakan – 55 Crores
Released at a dismal time of the year, this Anees Bazmee directorial tried its best to bring some smiles back at the box office. While the film was able to recover its money, it couldn’t however place itself in the super successful category. However, its box office run was a good sign for upcoming comedies of the year.
Bareilly Ki Barfi – 36 Crores
One of the most liked movies of the year, this comedy was purely driven by content and some of its fabulous performances. While the film opened very slow, the positive word of mouth helped sail it past the safe mark. With 36 crores, this comedy was a hit at the box office.
Judwaa 2 – 138 Crores
Continuing Varun Dhawan’s magical run at the box office, Judwaa 2 collected a massive 138 crores at the box office becoming the highest grossing Bollywood movies of the year so far. The grand success of this David Dhawan directorial proved that masala comedies will always be accepted by the audiences.
Shubh Mangal Saavdhaan – 42 Crores
Authenticating the comedy acceptance at the box office, this quirky fun comedy about erectile dysfunction made fabulous money at the box office and also made people laugh in the cinemas.
Toilet Ek Prem Katha – 132 Crores
While it was essentially a social drama talking about a very important subject, its success was reminiscent of its approach. The comic slant to the subject made this Akshay Kumar-Bhumi Pednekar starrer widely accepted and minted huge money at the same time.
Golmaal Again – 87.60 Crores (In opening Weekend)
With such huge figures pouring in the opening weekend itself, it is certain Golmaal Again would find place in the most successful movies of the year. The big Diwali release opened to more than 30 crores and got audiences queueing up at ticket counters. The big success is a sign enough to suggest how mainstream masala comedies will continue to make money if audiences endorse it.
Looks the audiences want to have a good laugh and that’s all!
