5 Things That Make Oscars 2018 A Landmark Year In The History Of Oscars
The 90th Academy Awards were full of a number of firsts- giving credits where it was due, accepting the fact that women and minority are poorly represented and the willingness of the industry to change and also that art knows no boundaries and there should be a free flow of artists and art across the borders. It seemed that for the first time, the whole Hollywood united to fight against the issues that still plague today's society everywhere across the globe.
Jimmy Kimmel delivered a powerful monologue at the start of the ceremony which took a dig at everyone from President Donald Trump's policies to Harvey Weinstein's sex scandal and applauded the fact that women and minorities were finally getting their due credit. He also threw light on the fact that there are just 10% women in behind the scenes categories and the gap needs to be filled. This year's Oscar was the initiator of change and no major shocker came in the winners.

This year's Academy Awards were very well balanced and one of the positive outcomes of the ceremony was that Hollywood showed its willingness to change. A lot of new and good things happened. Here are 5 things that made this year's Oscars a Landmark year in the history of Oscars:
Equal opportunities for All Genders: A number of celebrities called out the gender imbalance in Hollywood as a majority of the roles are taken by men and everyone agreed that it is time when people are assigned roles irrespective of their genders.
More Minority and Women led Projects: The humongous success of Black Panther and Wonder Woman also led to more demands for Minority and Women led films in Hollywood. Greta Gerwig found universal acclaim in Lady Bird while Jordan Peele won the Oscar for Best Original Screenplay. All the successes of last year helped give a boost to calls demanding more such projects.
Immigration and Diversity: Thanks to President Donald Trump's anti-immigration stance, a lot of speeches also focused on societies becoming more accepting and tolerant of people from other countries and religion. Guillermo del Toro, during his Oscar speech, called out, "I am an immigrant".
Women Safety: The Harvey Weinstein scandal rocked Hollywood in 2017 and more and more women came forward who had faced harassment from different actors, producers, directors, writers etc. A number of actresses called out the issues they faced and how everyone must come together and fight this.
Activism: The movements #metoo and #timesup campaign gathered steam and numerous celebrities were seen wearing pins of TimesUp and MeToo movements. Almost everyone who won talked about the need to eradicate discrimination and gender bias prevalent in the 21st century Hollywood.
