5 Bollywood Characters Of 2018 Who Have Stood Out Not Because Of Their Significance But Their Performance

2018 so far has been a mixed bag when it comes to Bollywood films. While the year has given us some landmark moments like Padmaavat it has also disappointed us with films like Aiyaari. However, even though it has been only three months, Bollywood has made us witness some stellar performances, especially from actors in roles that were not of the prime significance to the plot of the film, but made their presence felt simply due to their outstanding performances. To say we found out how great an actor Jim Sarbh in Padmaavat would be a great disservice to his body of work. Even with people not familiar with his theatre background, he has proven himself in Neerja and how. However, in Padmaavat, facilitated by the dramatic premise, he is one of the most memorable things about the film. That is surely saying a lot for a film where the lead cast was giving a performance of a lifetime. From balancing his subtlety of homosexuality on the edge of the sword or simple things like moving in a frame, the way he blends technicalities with a poetic grace, is a total visual treat.

It was a character that could have been so easy to miss out, especially with Ajay Devgn and Saurabh Shukla knocking it out of the park in every single frame they are in. But the 85-year-old actress, Pushpa Joshi, who plays the part of ‘Amma, Saurabh Shukla’s mother brings a wit and presence to the role that is unparalleled. As the fading matriarch of the family whose vulnerability bows down to her sass, she is a character that will stay with you for long.

It is very easy to write off our liking for Alok Nath’s character in Sonu Ke Titu Ki Sweety as intrigue for something out of the ordinary, but that would probably be a half-baked way of looking at it. Yes, the contrast of our ever sanskaari Babuji spewing expletives is fun, but there is much more to the character that keeps you hooked. The sarcasm and swag that Alok Nath pulls off and delivers a performance that is so outrageously comic.

Pari might have disappointed many, but one cannot discredit the fact that it certainly had a different story and a horde of intriguing characters. One of the characters that stand out simply because of his performance and not significance, is the character of the morgue worker played to perfection by Dibyendu Bhattacharya.  From his body language, to his acceptance of morbidity that his job entails to the various grey elements that he brings to the table, it is one character from Pari that haunts you not because it is supernatural in any way but so natural that it baffles you

It is not easy to stand out in a role as stereotypical as the ‘hero’s friend’ but actor Shreedhar Dubey manages to do exactly that. In a film where lead cast that includes actors like Jimmy Shergill, Vineet Kumar and Ravi Kissen are making the presence of the towering acting prowess feel, Shreedhar as Gopal, the faithful friend of Shravan is never confined within the boundaries of the usual sidekicks. He brings an integrity into the small role assigned to him and can be given a huge slice of the credit for giving the film a local flavor that is as authentic as the punches in the film.
