The whispers in hushed tone started a while back, perhaps when he lost the box-office battle to Ranveer Singh when Dilwale clashed with Bajirao Mastani, but now, after the debacle of Zero, it is a loud and clear. Shah Rukh Khan is in a dire need to revamp his career.

Shah Rukh has himself admitted that he is having a hard time choosing his next project and it is only understandable. He has taken the safe route and he has gone for experiments, but nothing has worked for him. What Shah Rukh needs right now is a director who can handle both Shah Rukh, the brand, and Shah Rukh, the actor. Currently, there are these 5 actors in Bollywood who can really do that and these are the 5 directors that Shah Rukh Khan must work with next to get over his slump.

Sriram Raghavan

Shah Rukh’s shot to fame was very unlike Salman or Aamir. While they were relying on action, romance and righteousness to make a case for them in Bollywood, Shah Rukh tasted success when he took the darker route and played negative characters to perfection. Maybe it is time to bring out that shade back again. And, if we are talking about dark entertainers who can be better than Sriram Raghavan. His films, though deliciously dark have an element of quirk that aids in the commercial viability of the film like we saw in Andhadhun. It is exactly this balance that Shah Rukh needs right now and who knows, together they may come up with something that can do what Baazigar did to Shah Rukh’s career in his initial days. thankfully, this might actually happen soon.

One of the issues of a star of Shah Rukh’s stature is the fact that his stardom seeps into the character. It actually needs a director with some serious craft to write and execute a character so strong that no amount of superstardom can overshadow it. Currently, the best person to do that in Bollywood is undoubtedly Zoya Akhtar and that is perhaps the biggest reason why Shah Rukh should really work with her. Also, historically, Shah Rukh has delivered really good films with female directors.

Ali Abbas Zafar

If there is one person who knows how to handle superstars and put them to the best possible use, it is surely Ali Abbas Zafar. With Sultan and Tiger Zinda Hai, he has proved that no one can portray Salman Khan the way he can.  Maybe he will execute the same skill with Shah Rukh and give us back the superstar and his roaring box-office success that we grew up watching.

Like Zoya Akhtar, he is another director whose characters speak louder than the stardom of the actors who play them. His films have a texture that is different than any other director yet they are entertaining and commercially viable. All the actors he has worked with owes him one of their most memorable characters ever and this is exactly what Shah Rukh needs right now, a well-written character that people would love as much as they have always loved Shah Rukh. Also, Sarkar has a very unique and subtle way of portraying romance and we thoroughly believe that no shade of romance should remain unexplored by Bollywood’s King of Romance.

Karan Johar

Whenever there is a major crisis in life that one has to overcome, it is always a good idea to go back to the basics. Shah Rukh perhaps needs to collaborate with Karan Johar. Not only has the Shah Rukh-Karan jodi never failed at the box-office, but Karan Johar has always been the person who has known how to portray Shah Rukh on-screen in the best way and play on his strengths. If not anything else, the nostalgia of Karan Johar and Shah Rukh coming together after almost 10 years would pull the audience to theatres.
