Abhishek Bachchan's The Big Bull Deserves Your Attention Even If You Have Watched Scam 1992 Already; Here's Why

Abhishek Bachchan starrer The Big Bull is due to release on Disney+ Hotstar tomorrow. The film which is inspired by the story of Harshad Mehta, the man behind the Financial Securities Scam of 1992, is even before its release facing comparisons to Hansal Mehta’s acclaimed web series from last year. From questions being throw at Abhishek Bachchan about comparisons to users on social media already writing the film off for just daring to take on the same subject, The Big Bull’s release marred by doubt as far as the audiences go.

Now here’s the thing, no matter how much one might have loved The Scam of 1992 where Pratik Gandhi nailed his portrayal as Harshad Mehta, the Abhishek Bachchan starrer still deserves a fair chance. The comparisons no doubt will follow even after the film releases tomorrow, but that doesn’t mean a film with an intriguing story to tell needs to be written off even before it has arrived.

Here are a few reasons why The Big Bull deserves your attention –

It’s not the same thing – No matter how much you want to compare The Big Bull with Scam 1992, even you would have realised soon after the trailer of the film dropped that it is not the same thing. The Big Bull may be inspired by Harshad Mehta’s tale but at the end of the day, it is all fiction and comes with a very different approach. Agreed, films will never be as nuanced as web series thanks to all the time liberty that the latter can take but that has never stopped us from loving cinema.

Because you loved Scam 1992 – Let’s face it financial securities is a very dry backdrop for any filmmaker or an actor to make interesting. If Scam 1992 caught your attention despite that, well then there’s sufficient merit to the story. If you loved what you saw in the web series then there’s no reason to refuse more content on the same subject, as The Bigg Bull can only add to it from a fresh perspective.

You have loved Bollywood original songs as well as their remixes (don’t lie) – Okay, that might be a bit of a stretch, more often than not remixes don’t stand a chance next to the originals. On the brighter side though, if nothing else they make us love the original that much more. Now, we don’t mean The Big Bull is the remix in this scenario, but the point is that just because there is one brilliant show on the topic doesn’t mean the film will not be good.

Hansal Mehta found it intriguing – Filmmaker Hansal Mehta who created Scam 1992 was one of the first celebrities to react to the trailer of the Abhishek Bachchan film when it released. He was definitely impressed with what he saw and even warned those comparing The Bigg Bull to his web series. "Please don't make unfair comparisons. There can be multiple tales on the same story. Every storyteller will have his own way and should be seen independent of the other. This film has so many talents involved just like my show. They've done their best and they deserve your love," Hansal Mehta had tweeted. "And very intriguing trailer with such phenomenal actors. You are in great form @juniorbachchan. More power to the entire team of #TheBigBull on @DisneyPlusHS," he added.

The Big Bull is due to release on Disney+ Hotstar on April 8 and also stars Illeana D’cruz, Sohum Shah, Nikita Dutta, Ram Kapoor, Saurabh Shukla and several others. The film may turn out to be a masterpiece or can be a big dud, but let’s reserve that judgment till we have seen it.
