Coolie No. 1: David Dhawan Reveals Film Will Not Have A COVID-19 Twist; Confirms Theatrical Release

One of the most awaited films of the year, Varun Dhawan and Sara Ali Khan’s Coolie No. 1 was supposed to hit theatres on 1st May. Fans were extremely excited to see Sara and Varun share the big screen for the first time and were eagerly waiting to watch the film. However, the release date was pushed indefinitely due to the coronavirus lockdown. As fans waited for updates about the same, Varun shared a new poster of his character wearing a mask. This resulted in rumors about Coolie No. 1 having a COVID 19 twist!

Well director David Dhawan has clarified that the pandemic will not be mentioned in his film. Talking to Bollywood Hungama, he stated, “Firstly, my film is complete and ready for release. Secondly Coolie No 1 is a comedy. And the Coronavirus is nothing to laugh about. It has taken millions of lives all over the world. As a filmmaker, I think it would be very irresponsible of me to slip in some reference to the virus just to give my film an added relevance.”

Coolie No. 1 is a remake of the director’s 1995 film of the same name, which originally featured Govinda and Karisma Kapoor. While makers of films such as Gulabo Sitabo and Gunjan Saxena: The Kargil Girl decided to go for an OTT release amid the lockdown, David Dhawan has confirmed that Varun and Sara’s film will go ahead with a theatre release when the situation is under control. He said, “That’s what my audience and my son Varun’s audience want.”
