Did You Know Anurag Kashyap Set Out To Be A Scientist And Not A Filmmaker? This Is What Changed His Mind

Anurag Kashyap is a director par excellence and has ever so often convinced us of his genius through the way he narrates stories. Now, all of us are aware that he started off as a co-writer on the Ram Gopal Verma film Staya way back in 1998. But he definitely floored us as a filmmaker with Black Friday in 2007 and there has been no stopping him since. Filmmaking, however, isn’t what Anurag had initially set out to do!

Being an outsider to the industry Anurag never had big Bollywood dreams as a student and he in fact wanted to be a scientist. He enrolled into Hansraj College to study Zoology and it was there he joined a theatre group and happened to watch the Vittorio De Sica film The Bicycle Thief. The film changed him in a way that he left all of it and moved to Mumbai to be a filmmaker.

Like many others in the industry had had a humble beginning and it did not happen on the sets of Satya. The maverick filmmaker, in fact, had to struggle hard in Mumbai and even sleep on the beach as the money ran out. He worked at the Prithvi theatres for a bit and even worked on a play which was left incomplete as the director died. After much struggle, he went on to write for a few episodes of the TV show Kabhie Kabhie as a start but never had to look back.

Well, he’s sure come a long way from his scientist days and is a maverick filmmaker who doesn’t let us down each time he picks up a film and at this point, we're all glad he choose filmmaking.

We wish the very versatile and talented Anurag Kashyap a very Happy Birthday!
