    Legendary Bengali Actor Soumitra Chatterjee Passes Away At The Age Of 85

    Legendary film actor Soumitra Chatterjee, who has been a part of the film industry for over six decades, breathed his last in Kolkata today. He was 85 years old.

    The actor, who had collaborated with director Satyajit Ray for as many as 14 films, had developed COVID-19 complications after testing positive on October 6th. He had been battling for his life in a city hospital. He had received plasma therapy and was stable before his condition deteriorated and became grim. He was no longer responding to treatments. A statement from the hospital read, “We declare with a heavy heart that Shri Soumitra Chattopadhyay breathed his last at 12:15 pm at Belle Vue Clinic today. We pay our homage to his soul.”

    despite his age, he had been one of the busiest actors in the Bengali film industry. he had been working for a documentary titled Abhijan directed by actor Parambrata Chattopadhyay. Last he attended the shooting floor at Bharatlaxmi Studio was on October 1. Born in 1935, he rose to fame with films like Apur Sansar, Hirak Rajar Deshe, Ghare Baire, Ganashatru and Charulata. He is also etched in the hearts of Bengali film lovers as Feluda, the detective created by Satyajit Ray. He had has received the 'Officier des Arts et Metiers', the highest award for arts given by the French government, and a Lifetime Achievement Award from Italy. Back home, he had received the Padma Bhushan, Sangeet Natak Akademi Award, National Film Award, and Dadasaheb Phalke Award for lifetime contribution to Indian cinema. May his soul rest in peace.
