Last year, the Hindi film industry lost a few gems that left a void in our hearts. One of them was the very versatile and supremely talented Irrfan Khan, who won us over with every performance. His untimely demise left us heartbroken. Other than being a superstar who will forever be remembered by the industry, he was also a loving husband to wife Sutapa Sikdar, a doting father to sons Babil Khan and Ayaan Khan, and a mentor to actor Nawazuddin Siddiqui.

In a chat with ETimes, Nawazuddin fondly remembered Irrfan. He recalled how he learnt a lot from the late actor during their interactions when Irrfan directed him in Alvida. Nawazuddin shared, “When he was directing me in ‘Alvida’ around 2003, he demonstrated a very nice aspect, about using fewer and crisper dialogues. In a scene where I was supposed to ask a girl to come over and sit on my bicycle, Irrfan bhai told me that I can drop the word ‘cycle’ since movies are an audio-visual medium. He taught me ‘less is more’. This is a theory that even I used to follow and his advice only cemented it.”

Nawazuddin also revealed that he met Irrfan’s son Babil as a child multiple times when their families met for festivals such as Holi and Diwali. Well, Babil is all grown up now and is ready to make his acting debut with Anvita Dutt’s upcoming film Qala, co-starring Bulbbul actress Tripti Dimri. Just like us, Nawazuddin also hopes that Babil has a successful career in films.
