The stage is set for the 93d Academy Awards. Delayed from their usual February deadline and having seen some major changes due to the ongoing pandemic, the Oscars 2021, however, maintain the distinction of being an in-person ceremony, unlike the virtually held BAFTAs, Emmys and Golden Globes and will broadcast from two places in Los Angeles - the Dolby Theatre and Union Station. For nominees unable to travel, hubs have been designated London and Paris to join the ceremony.

This year with an important qualification of theatrical release set aside, digital streaming giant Netflix scored the most number of nominations including 10 for David Flincher's film Mank. In the pandemic impaled Hollywood in 2020, the picks for nominations were slim given how theatres remained a no-go zone.

Keeping this in mind, the Academy which is stringent about its qualifications cast aside an important one – an eligible entry must have a theatrical run of at least 7 days with 3 shows minimum on each day. This opened doors for many big commercial streamers including Apple, Amazon and Netflix in a major way.

The MOST NOMINATED FILMS THIS YEAR

In the Oscars history, however, the most number of nominations has never meant a sure-shot win for any project. In 2019, Netflix’s Roma also received 10 nominations but only managed to bag three wins which did not include the Best Picture. In 2020, Irishman, again with 10 nominations won no awards.

The Academy Awards will take place on 25 April (26 April, Monday morning in India).
