Shah Rukh, Salman, Big B Used To Tease Amrish Puri For Eating ‘Ghaas-Poos’, Reveals Grandson Vardhan

One of the most talented and versatile actors of the Hindi film industry, the incredible Amrish Puri has gifted fans many super hit films in his career of 38 long years. He was the ultimate on-screen villain of Bollywood and even today, his characters such as Mogambo, Thakral, Balwant Rai and Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge Bauji are remembered fondly. On his 88^th birth anniversary today, his grandson Vardhan Puri remembers his childlike enthusiasm for cinema and simple lifestyle.

Talking to Bollywood Life, Vardhan shared that his grandfather was not too fond of outside food and would carry his tiffin containing simple dal, roti, salad and soup to the film sets. He recalled, “Salman Khan saab, Bachchan saab (Amitabh Bachchan), Shah Rukh Khan saab all used to make fun of him because I still remember, that big dabbas of biryani, ghost and kebabs would come from Salman Khan saab's home and they used to all say, “Arey, Amrishji why are you eating this ghaas-poos (vegetarian food), please eat with us’.”

He went on to add, “And daadu would just take a bite so that no one would feel bad, and then would say, ‘Arey, I'm happy with my simple food.’ So, he never ate outside food because he would always say that his voice is too important for him and he couldn't abuse it. So, everything was always measured, he used to make sure that the food was made in such a way that it would never damage his throat.”

Well, just like Amrish Puri himself, his voice was legendary. It was his dominating yet charming screen presence and baritone voice which made him stand out from the other villains of his time. An absolute star!
