Shekhar Kapur's Statement Reveals Sushant Was Devastated After Paani Was Shelved; Film Had A Rs. 150 Cr. Budget

Filmmaker Shekhar Kapur was next in line after Sanjay Leela Bhansali who was asked by the Mumbai police to record his statement in the case of Sushant Singh Rajput’s death. On Thursday reports came stating that the filmmaker, instead of going to the police station, sent his statement over email.

Shekhar was to direct Sushant in his third film with Yash Raj Films, Paani. The actor apparently had let go of SLB’s Ram Leela as he was prepping for Paani but ultimately the film got shelved. Shekhar Kapur had tweeted a day after Sushant’s death he knew the pain the actor was in.

He tweet read: “I knew the pain you were going through. I knew the story of the people that let you down so bad that you would weep on my shoulder. I wish Iwas around the last 6 months. I wish you had reached out to me. What happened to you was their Karma. Not yours. #SushantSinghRajput”

Shekhar who is not in Mumbai has been now summoned to the police station in person to record his statement despite the details he shared over email. A Mid-Day report has a senior police officer reveal the details of Shekhar’s email statement according to which Sushant was devastated after Paani was shelved.

The police officer tells Mid-Day, "We have summoned him to come and record his statement based on his tweet, which he posted a day after the actor's death. He has sent some details via email, which we are considering but we need more clarity and a detailed statement. It will be recorded after he returns to the city."

Pani was shelved in 2015 and according to Shekhar Kapur Yash raj backed out due to creative differences after having spent Rs. 5 crores on the project which was to be made on a budget of Rs. 150 crores. The actor, according to him was working really hard to prepare for the project.

Regarding the statement, the police personnel revealed, "He (Shekhar) hasn't named anybody but has said that Sushant worked really hard for the film, which got shelved due to creative differences between him and Yash Raj Films. He also said that Sushant was totally devastated after that and this could be the reason why he was battling depression but he never discussed it."

Shekhar Kapur who has been in London was not in touch the actor for some time and also claimed he did not know the reason behind his depression. He will be recording his statement in person once he is back in the city.
