Shubh Mangal Zyada Saavdhan: Ayushmann Says He Was Once ‘Borderline Homophobic’, Confesses He Wasn’t Too Progressive

One of the most awaited films of the year, Shubh Mangal Zyada Saavdhan is all set to hit theatres this week. The social romantic comedy drama follows the tale of a young gay couple who embark on a journey to make their family understand and accept their relationship. Ayushmann Khurrana and Jitendra Kumar will be playing the lead roles in the film and left the internet in a frenzy with their adorable lip-lock in the trailer. However, Ayushmann wasn’t always this open-minded.

In a recent chat with Bollywood Life, the Badhaai Ho actor was asked about the first time he got to know about homosexuality. His reply is sure to leave you surprised. Ayushmann confessed, “I don't remember that. It was probably in school, early teens maybe. I was in an all-boys school and an all-boys college. I was not very receptive. I was not very progressive in my thought process. I was probably borderline homophobic. But I saw the transition in my thought process over the years when I came to Delhi and Bombay, and met people from the community.”

He continued to share, “I became more sensitised. Then I realised that was such a fool back in the day. I thought that the transition I went through, any average Indian homophobe can go through as well. If we manage to do that in our film, it will be a huge victory.”

Well that revelation sure is interesting and we hope this film manages to change the mindset of many others in our society. Slated to hit theaters on 21st February, Shubh Mangal Zyada Saavdhan is directed by Hitesh Kewalya and also features the very talented and adored Gajraj Rao and Neena Gupta.
