Shahid Kapoor and Kiara Advani’s romantic drama Kabir Singh was undoubtedly one of the most talked about films of 2019. It became the second highest grossing film of the year and Shahid’s powerful performance was praised by the audience as well as critics. However, the film received mixed reviews. While some thought it was a beautiful and very realistic love story, others felt it glamorized toxic masculinity and misogyny. Actress Taapsee Pannu was one celebrity who did not watch the film for a similar reason.

During a live chat with Bollywood Hungama, a netizen asked why Taapsee didn’t like Kabir Singh. He went on to add that she herself has played many flawed characters and stated that people can be toxic irrespective of their gender. Replying to the fan, the actress said, “Agreed! 100%. I am all for gender equality. I don’t have a problem in playing grey shades, I have played an antagonist also in Badla. But the point is you should not be celebrating it.” She explained that in the end of Badla if her character got away and roamed around freely it would have been wrong. She added, “I think that’s the difference between a Kabir Singh grey or toxic character and the toxic character that I am okay playing. Don’t celebrate it.”

Taapsee further stated, “I have never imposed my opinion on people. I am just saying mere ko pasand nahi hai toh maine jaake nahi dekhi. That’s the maximum I’ll do. I’ll not tell you to go or not to go and watch it. I just don’t like the celebration of toxic masculinity, that’s all.”

Director Sandeep Vanga had defended his film in an earlier interview and stated, “When you are deeply in love and deeply connected to a woman (and vice versa), if you don’t have the liberty of slapping each other, then I don’t see anything there.” When asked about her take on the director’s controversial statement, Taapsee said that fans can watch her film Thappad and they will get the answer.

Anubhav Sinha’s 2020 drama Thappad follows the story of a woman who ends up reevaluating her marriage after her husband slaps her at a party.
