20 Years Of Hera Pheri: Rambha –Akshay’s ‘Mujhse Milti Hai’ Song Aired In The Promos But Was Dropped From The Film!

Today, the cult comedy of the Indian film industry, Hera Pheri, completes 20 years. While you might be surprised by how old we have gotten (we are 90s kids too), what you might not have realized is that this was Akshay’s first comedy film! The remake of the Malayalam film, Ramji Rav Speaking, made its way into the hearts of the audiences and even today, when it’s aired on Tv, rarely do people want to give it a miss! But did you know that this film was the culmination of a lot of combinations that did not work out. What we mean to say is that, the film involved way more people that we have seen in the final cut. While many were replaced, many had been dropped too! Say for example Rambha.

Rambha was supposed to be a part of a song in the film. In fact, probably some 80s folks might still remember a song that would be shown on TV at this time- Mujhse Milti Hain Ek Ladki Rozana. Sung by the hit duo Udit Narayan and Alka Yagnik, the song had Akshay Kumar and Rambha and it was also aired as a part of the film! But in the final cut, the song was dropped! So what we have now is just the audio of the song. Well, something similar happened with Bhagam Bhag’s Meri Pehli Mohabbat Hai, which wasn’t a part of the film initially and was just released to bring the audiences into the theatre, but they were so disappointed that they demanded the song to be added and the makers had to comply with it!

Not just Rambha, the film was supposed to have stars like Karisma Kapoor, Sanjay Dutt and Raveena Tandon. Sanjay Dutt was the original selection for Suniel Shetty’s part while Karisma was to essay Tabu’s character. While the former dropped because of his court sessions, the latter rejected the role saying it wasn’t substantial enough. In fact, Raveena Tandon was supposed to do an item number in the film, which later went to Namrata Shirodkar.

But what we finally got has not just been etched in our memories, but will also go down in the history of Hindi cinema. We have our fingers crossed for Hera Pheri 3.
