Filmmaker Vimal Murugan Talks About His Farmer Centric Movie ‘Vayakaattu Maappilai’

Apart from the glitz and glamour of Kollywood, it is popularly known that many farmers are suffering huge amount of crop failures due to shortage of water and their debt is constantly increasing. The solution to this issue has been figured out by the government, but has not been implemented. Tapping into this issue, filmmaker Vimal Murugan has directed a movie titled as ‘Vayakaattu Maappilai’.

The movie emphasizes on the implementation of the much talked about ‘Athikadavu-Avinashi Scheme’. ‘Vayakaattu Maappilai’ will star Vetrivelan and Yogendhra. The movie will also star starlet Jothisha in the lead role. The script of the movie has been written by T.S Diwakar. Regarding the movie, auteur Murugan was quoted as saying, “I know that I am touching a controversial subject — ‘The Athikadavu-Avinashi Scheme’, an ambitious project, which envisages providing irrigation facilities to the drought prone areas and ground water depleted areas of Kongunad and the western parts of Tamil Nadu”.

The director further added, “All said and done, the promises made by every government and politician are still in paper and nothing has been executed. The film brings to fore the predicaments of Kaaramadai, Annur, Paerundhurai, and Puliampatti farmers and people who have to walk miles to get potable water. We have also brought some of the real farmers on board”.
