P. Bharathiraja To Direct Sequel Of His 1981 Classic Cult ‘Alaigal Oivathillai’

If recent reports are to be trusted, Periyamayathevar Bharathiraja will be directing a sequel to his 1981 Tamil blockbuster, ‘Alaigal Oivathillai’. The ace filmmaker, who turned 75-year-old on July 17, himself announced the news about the second instalment. The classic love story received eight Tamil Nadu State Film Awards.

The movie starred Karthik Muthuraman and Radha in the lead roles. According to reports, the director is considering filmmaker Vasanth’s son to play the male lead in the sequel. Details on other cast and crew are expected to be out soon.

As of now, it is not known whether the evergreen couple Karthik and Radha will be a part of the sequel. Iyakunar Imayam Bharathiraja is popular for realistic and sensitive portrayal of village-life in his films. ‘Alaigal Oivathillai’ also conveyed subtle hints of power-play in villages, and class, caste and religious barriers that divide and even oppress people deemed lower in status.
